There was a light wind. The sand was cool and wet underfoot, smooth as a fresh canvas from the high night tide. The sea, still cold in September, washed forward in gentle waves. Ahead and to the left was the full moon. To the right, the sky was only just beginning to lighten, fading from velvety black to slate grey and on into the oranges and purples of the sunrise.
A few months ago, we wrote about the unforgettable experience of swimming with whale sharks in Tofo, just south of Vilankulo. Being so close to such large animals, especially in the water, which is not a human’s natural comfort zone, elicits all kinds of emotions. The day after that swim, I woke up early and walked to the beach from our lodge in Barra just as the sun was coming up. As I stood alone on the beach, before the hustle and bustle of fishermen, tourists, dogs, and children, all was still. The same awe as I felt watching the whale sharks filled me as I watched the sun emerging into the dark sky, this every day phenomenon just as breathtaking as those larger, ‘once in a lifetime’ moments.
This is a reminder, both to you, our dear readers, and to ourselves, to take a moment to appreciate such everyday beauty, and be reminded of how magnificent the world surrounding us truly is.
A little humor goes a long way too!
Wonderful photos and a good message!
